Is the world heading towards second Cold War?

This has become an important question around the world, which is being explained in different ways. International relations experts and important world leaders are responding to this question in their own way. From which it is clear that a fear of a new Cold War is in everyone’s heart and mind. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Cold War ended and there was no country left that could compete with the American monopoly. At the end of the First Cold War, there was a perception in the world that the world would now be governed by a single country. However, the situation is changing rapidly. In this regard, a statement by Chinese Ambassador to the United States Chen Gang is significant. Chen Gang said that if the new Cold War continues, China is not the Soviet Union that will lose. He also warned that the United States should exercise caution in dealing with Taiwan, which could lead to a confrontation between the two countries. Because China’s nuclear weapons are much smaller than those of the United States. Chen Gong’s statement was also published by the Chinese embassy on January 24. He was appointed China’s ambassador to the United States in July last year.

The details of his statement are as follows: ‘Why does it seem like the new Cold War is coming back? This is because some people in the United States have a Cold War mentality and are treating China like the Soviet Union. But China is not the Soviet Union and the United States is not what it was 30 years ago. Therefore, it is in the wider interest of both countries to adopt a peaceful approach. “China has carefully considered the reasons for the break-up of the Soviet Union and has learned from it,” he said. The Communist Party is not as stubborn as the Soviet Union. The United States is now China’s largest trading partner, while China is the third largest trading partner of the United States after Mexico and Canada.

Is the Chinese ambassador’s statement a threat to the United States, or is his telling Russia that the Soviet Union would not have collapsed if its leadership had not made “mistakes”? Is China also mirroring Russia’s weaknesses?

World affairs experts say that at the moment, China is not only threatening the United States, but is also telling Russia that its leadership is weak because the Soviet Union collapsed under the supervision of former leaders.

On the other hand, it is also true that there is considerable tension between the United States and Russia over the Ukraine issue. The world sees the United States and China as rivals in the new Cold War.

It is also a fact that China has made a place in the world’s major economies while Russia has not become a big economy. In 1978, China’s share in the world economy was only 1.8% which increased to 18.2% in 2017. The three leaders in power are Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping and Xi Jinping. It is not wrong to say that China is developing rapidly under the leadership of a strong leader like Xi Jinping. At the same time, Russia’s grip on the political arena has loosened. On the other hand, China is also threatening Russia, as evidenced by the statement of Chinese Ambassador to the United States Chen Gang. Experts believe that if Russia had changed itself economically and technologically, it would be so today. Would not

But there is another significant aspect, and that is the bilateral trade between China and the United States, which has reached 700 billion, which shows how much the two countries depend on each other despite the tensions. History has shown that there were no trade relations between the United States and the Soviet Union, while the United States is heavily dependent on China. The United States cannot stop bilateral trade with China even if it wants to. On March 29 this year, Brett Stephens, a former editor of the Jerusalem Post and a well-known Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, wrote a column in the New York Times entitled “How Can We Win the Second Cold War?”

“In the First Cold War, the United States and our allies had secret weapons against the Soviet Union and its satellites,” Stephens wrote at the beginning of the article. The weapon was not developed by the CIA, nor did it come from DARPA or any lab. The weapon was communism. “Stephens wrote:” The West has benefited from Russian communism because it could not stand up to the free market. Soviet policies were failing. “They pretend to give us money and we work,” he was quoted as saying in the Soviet Union. This policy shattered the Soviet Union, which was armed with thousands of nuclear weapons.

“We are now heading for another Cold War,” he added. This time China is in front of us. Both countries are clearly saying that not only their interests but also their values are colliding. The United States has said China is challenging the rule of law, while China says the United States should refrain from imposing its democracy on the world.

Now, considering Stephens’ words, it can be said that China has destroyed communism. On the other hand, China is not only giving tough time to America in the free market system but also creating difficulties for America. Both China and the United States have said they do not want a Cold War, but it is noteworthy that US President Joe Biden has called for a boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing. After announcing that the United States would not participate in the Olympics, Australia, Britain, Canada and Japan also backed the US decision to boycott the Winter Olympics, while China agreed between the United States, Britain and Australia. Security agreements have been blamed for increasing the risks of the Cold War.

The blacklisting of Chinese companies can also be mentioned here, which provoked a strong reaction from China.

There is a perception in the world that China is challenging US supremacy and that this could be the biggest reason for the Second Cold War.
