This workshop was organized by the Gastroenterology Unit of East Medical Ward under the guidance of Prof Dr. Bilquis Shabbir, HOD EMW and Chairperson department of Medicine.
Vice Chancellor King Edward Medical University Prof Khalid Masood Gondal was the chief Guest of the Occasion.
Prof Muhammad Shoaib Shafi SVP CPSP & Prof Shahid Sarwar graced the occasion as Guests of Honour and Guest Speakers. Dr Bilal Aziz moderated the session.
The session started with the recitation from the Holy Quran followed by a brief overview of the format of the workshop. Discussion was case-based, totally interactive, included clinical scenarios on various liver disorders.
Prof Bilquis Shabbir in her welcome address gave an overview of liver disorders worldwide and in particular Pakistan. She projected the data, statistics and details of services provided by the Hepatitis clinic and Endoscopic suite to patients of liver and GI diseases at Mayo Hospital during the last 1 year.
Prof Khalid Masood Gondal Vice Chancellor KEMU appreciated team EMW for organizing this academic activity.He highlighted how quacks are misleading the general public. At this occassion he presented the future vision of KEMU, in initiating the fellowship programmes in Transplant Hepatology and Hepatobiliary Surgery in the current year, inshaAllah ta’ala.

Prof Muhammad Shoaib Shafi Senior Vice President CPSP, with a special interest in of Gastroenterology and Hepatology , shared his memories the history of East Medical Ward, his experience as a registrar during the training years, and how Gastroenterology unit came into being in the 1980’s. He attributed the current working of the established training of Gastroenterology to the great legendary teachers of East Medical Wards a result of their efforts in initiating the Post-graduation fellowship programme in GASTROENTEROLOGY. He supported the vision of VC KEMU Prof Khalid Masud Gondal in bringing up the superspecialities of Transplant Surgery and Hepatobiliary Surgery at KEMU.
Prof Shahid Sarwar gave insight into brief workup and management plans regarding all the clinical scenarios presented.
Dr Imran Mehfooz presented endoscopic images of different cases to the audience.
Dr Bilal Aziz discussed an important disease NAFLD, its workup, management and increasing global burden
Dr Naeem Aslam shed light on management of HBV in pregnancy as per guidelines.
Dr Rashid Ali presented case scenarios related to chronic HCV, management and complications.
Dr Habib talked about Portal vein thrombosis & its management in the current era.
Dr Nauman explained indications of Liver transplantation in patients with DCLD.
The hybrid workshop was attended by numerous house physicians, postgraduate residents, senior registrars and consultants from the medical floor. In the end, shields were presented to the speakers, guests of honour and chief guest.
